Micaiah Bell’s story is a testament to the extraordinary impact sport and donor support can have on a student’s life. He has transitioned from excelling at Harvard University and Harvard Crimson football to making his mark at Green Templeton College (GTC) and the Oxford Lancers – the university’s American Football team. His journey highlights the profound influence that sport and supporter’s generosity can have on shaping the next generation of leaders.
A champion on and off the field
A standout defensive lineman, Micaiah became a pivotal player and helped secure an Ivy League Championship in 2023 while at Harvard. So, it is no surprise that by the time he graduated from his BSc in Psychology, he received five Division 1 offers to continue playing at the highest level of the game. However, Micaiah chose a different path—to leave his home country for Oxford where he would continue playing and pursue a master’s in sociology through playing football.
Now, as captain of the Lancers, he brings unparalleled experience and leadership, inspiring his team both on and off the field. ‘Sport taught me discipline, resilience, and teamwork,’ Micaiah says, ‘qualities that serve me just as much in academia as they do on the field.’
The power of donor support
Micaiah’s journey to Oxford was made possible by the support of donors who believe in the transformative power of education and sport. ‘Donor support is the lifeblood of any college,’ Micaiah reflects. ‘It can change the entire trajectory of students’ lives, from funding extracurriculars to providing financial aid. I wouldn’t be here without it.’
Having benefitted from full financial aid during both his undergraduate and postgraduate years, Micaiah deeply understands the significance of such contributions. ‘It’s not just about the finances,’ he explains. ‘It’s about the doors it opens—the opportunities to grow, learn, and contribute. Because this impact is not always visible, I’ve always made an effort to express my thanks in a meaningful way to those that have made a difference in my life. I think other students too find it helpful to put a face to those supporting them and events and special occasions make that possible.’
Alumni connections: transformational influence
Beyond financial support, Micaiah’s experiences have been profoundly shaped by the mentorship and guidance of alumni. At Harvard, and now at Green Templeton, alumni have played an integral role in his personal and professional growth: ‘Meeting donors at Harvard has shaped how I think about giving back. Whether it’s supporting someone financially or sharing my own experiences, I’ve realised how important it is to make an impact on others’ lives.’
Through these connections, Micaiah has come to appreciate the power of personal relationships in amplifying the impact of financial contributions. ‘It’s not just about writing a check,’ he says. ‘It’s about creating a legacy that inspires and empowers others. GTC is unique in that each year it offers graduate students an unforgettable experience, even with a smaller budget than other colleges. Therefore, the impact that donors and alumni have on this institution goes far beyond that of a member of a large college with large endowment. These donations, and impact of alumni engagement never go unnoticed.’
Looking ahead: building a legacy of impact
At college, Micaiah is deeply involved in the Graduate Common Room, serving as Vice President, External Entertainment. For him, fostering a sense of community is just as important as academic success. ‘Entertainment brings people together,’ he explains. ‘It’s where friendships are formed and connections are made, and an opportunity to get away from the stress of academic life. Many people will make lifelong friends and bond with them at social events – it’s an opportunity to cross paths with people you wouldn’t otherwise meet, like the 80 MBA students at GTC.’
Looking ahead, Micaiah is passionate about creating more opportunities for alumni and students to connect. ‘I see alumni relationships and sport as a lifeline for students,’ he says. ‘They’re essential for navigating academia and building a future career. I long for a future in which each student can see the steps of those who came before them, and have something to strive for, and leave with connections to alumni that last a lifetime. That is what donating to GTC and being engaged with the college is about.’
A call to action
Micaiah’s story exemplifies the profound difference that sport and donor support can make. From financial aid to mentorship, these contributions create opportunities for exceptional students to thrive and give back to their communities.
‘Stories like mine are made possible by the generosity of alumni and donors,’ Micaiah says. ‘Join us in shaping the future by supporting the next generation of leaders at Green Templeton College.’
Through the support of alumni and donors, students like Micaiah achieve their dreams and inspire others to do the same, continuing to build the Green Templeton legacy of excellence and global impact.
