Earth Sciences alumnus and geologist Dr Nick Gardiner (St Peter's, 1991) attended COP26 as part of the delegation for the Geological Society for London. He notes in this video that there was almost no discussion about how the world will deliver the vast amount of special materials and metals that will be required for a transition to a low or no carbon existence. He says that the geologists will, by implication, be in demand and that while we don't like the 'M' word (meaning mining) it's going to be a critical activity to deliver all those batteries and other electrification infrastructure, alongside wind turbines and many other items.
